Sporting Heroes of Essex and East London 1960-2000 by Dr Phil Stevens

_______________________

Despite the slight concentration referred to by the title, by fixation dual of Englands titans of the duration Bobby Moore and Graham Gooch at the books core, Phil Stevens has broadened the appeal.

The links in in between footballer and cricketer were close: both were innate in to close-knit, working-class family groups from the East End Stevens is educational on the symbiotic couple in in between that area and Essex both went to propagandize in Leytonstone, Moore played cricket for Essex Youth, Gooch is a ardent West Ham fan.

Around these executive characters the book darts off down a innumerable byways, from Hackney Marshes in the heyday of 120 football pitches to womens cricket in Victoria Park. At times repetitive, in places overburdened with detail, this is but an interesting mess-up of a book.

Certainly the former Hammer Tony Cottee seems to have enjoyed it, as he carried large chunks of the Introduction for his Foreword. Perhaps the an Essex joke.
